ERTIS grid carbon: measured hourly intensity per European grid
ERTIS publishes hourly grid carbon intensity, in gCO2eq/kWh, for each European state it samples. It is computed from the ENTSO-E Transparency Platform's actual generation per production type (A75): each hour's generation is weighted with the IPCC AR5 WGIII Annex III lifecycle median for its production type, and the result is mapped to the public cloud regions that sit on that grid. It is a by-side measure published beside the ESE axis, and it never enters an axis, a weight or the composite score.

States, cleanest latest hour first
| State, top three in the mix | Hour (UTC) | Latest gCO2eq/kWh | 24 h mean | Factor coverage |

Source: ENTSO-E Transparency Platform, Actual Generation per Production Type (A75), weighted with IPCC AR5 WGIII Annex III lifecycle medians. Factor coverage is the share of generation that has a factor. A state without generation in the source shows NO_DATA_IN_SOURCE and no figure.

Source: the same window, read through the grid of the state each region sits in. A region carries its grid's figure, not a measurement inside the facility.
Method and limits
- The factors are lifecycle medians, so the figure is closer to the electricity input of a battery life-cycle footprint than to a GHG Protocol location-based Scope 2 figure, which uses combustion-only factors. Read the two as different quantities.
- Imports and exports between grids are not modelled. Each state's intensity is the intensity of what is generated inside it.
- The committed block is a 24 hour window. An annual declaration needs a full-year mean, which this page does not publish.
- Transport is a daily batch job. No MQTT or Kafka broker is deployed.
- The European Commission's data-point guidance for the battery passport, last updated 2026-08-15, lists the carbon footprint declaration and label as not to be filled as of February 2027; their format is pending an implementing act.
- A state for which ENTSO-E holds no generation in the window shows NO_DATA_IN_SOURCE, never a borrowed figure from a neighbour or an earlier period.

For battery-passport platforms
Battery-passport tooling today concentrates on two ends of the chain: the certification of passport software, and the assembly of product data from documents such as environmental product declarations, life-cycle assessments and supplier declarations. A measured, time-resolved grid-electricity input to the manufacturing footprint is the piece that is usually missing.
ERTIS supplies that input per European grid, hourly, by API in JSON and CSV. Every response carries the factor coverage, the hash of the retrieved source responses and a stale flag, and the Scope 2 endpoint refuses to return a figure from a stale feed. The method and the code are open.
Site-specific engagements are available on request: a full-year series for a named plant, imports modelled, delivered as a signed report anchored to the hash of its inputs. Write to info@qesis.eu.
